Are you experiencing root chakra issues? In this post, I’ll give you the full rundown on the root chakra. We’ll explore what the root chakra is responsible for, how an unbalanced root chakra manifests in your body, and signs and symptoms that you may need to heal your root chakra.
I’ll also give you a few grounding strategies for how to bring your root chakra back into balance.
Let’s get right into it. 👇🏽
What is a chakra?
First, let's talk about what is a chakra.
Chakra is a Sanskrit word for ‘wheel’. Chakras are circular spirals of energy, which exchange energy between layers of the energy field and the physical body. They’re in our aura and and in the physical body, nourishing all of our surrounding glands and organs.
We can think of chakras as gateways through which energy enters and leaves the body. They’re cone-shaped, with the smallest point meeting at the spine.
As you can see, there's a thicker cone and then it goes all the way to a tiny point, which will always meet within the spine. That's why in yoga, in kundalini, it’s all about the spine.
While it’s actually believed that there are thousands of tiny chakras within the body, the main ones you need to be aware of are the seven foundational chakras.
Those are:
Root chakra (Muladhara)
Sacral chakra (Svadhisthana)
Solar plexus chakra (Manipura)
Heart chakra (Anahata)
Throat chakra (Vishuddha)
Third eye chakra (Ajna)
Crown chakra (Sahasrara).
When we talk about chakra problems, we often talk about a chakra being out of alignment or being blocked. But what most people don’t realize is that chakra problems are usually a result of your chakra being overactive or underactive.
When your chakra is overactive, it means that that certain power center is most likely easily agitated. It’s reactive, aggressive, and very outward.
When your chakra is underactive, that specific power center is lifeless, sluggish, slow - it’s contracted.
A good way to think about it is like this. 👇🏽
Is it taking too much energy from the other chakras? Or does it not have enough energy?
This quote by Anodea Judith about chakras is one of my favorites, and also is helpful in understanding their power.
Remember: if you are living, you have life force energy. It’s the breath of air given to us by source, by a higher power, and when it’s blown through our body that is our life force.
The most important thing we have is our lifeforce. It’s our vitality.
When we are clear, we are here and ready to co-create.
Heaven on Earth happens in your body first
For a brief moment, I want to talk about WHY healing your chakras is so so important.
Everything that you want to create, to experience, to be a part of - it has to be felt in the body first. Always.
Heaven on earth is a concept Is the earth is anchoring into a 5D planet, one where everyone is using their intuitive abilities and channeling, we are working together and accepting our differences, there's a lack of war and there's an abundance of health and vitality.
But that must happen HERE - within the vessel, within our inner universe, within the confines of our skin, before we can see it and experience it on the outside.
The Root Chakra
The root chakra is the first chakra. And while each chakra is equally important, the Root Chakra is truly the foundation.
And this is also a super important aspect of what I’m gauging about a clients energy body in regard to their Most Abundant Timeline…here’s why ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
If the Root Chakra is not empowered, activated and in alignment, it will start affecting the rest of the chakras.
So it’s SUPER important to get grounded in this chakra more than anything.
No matter what you’re going through, whether it’s a loss of a loved one, a divorce, a move, a layoff, global pandemic, you’re always going to have to address the root chakra.
We cannot manifest anything unless the root chakra is in alignment.
Location
The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine, at the perineum. However, it affects the entire area surrounding your pelvis (legs and feet)
Purpose
The purpose of the root chakra is SURVIVAL. It’s the will to live, it’s food and shelter. It’s your primary family unit. And it’s also sex.
The focus of the root chakra is basically all about safety and security. It’s physical, mental, and emotional security, but more than anything, it's tangible physical security.
Things like:
Do I have a home?
Do I have food?
Do I have re$ource$?
It's the basic need for survival.
The root chakra controls the adrenal gland, and the body parts it’s responsible for are the spinal column, kidneys, and the stress response parts of our body - feet, legs, anus, va6ina, peni5 and rectum.
(Please note I am only “censoring” these words because I don’t want to be marked a spam, not because there should ever be shame around these words)
The first chakra represents a primal part of us. If our basic needs aren't met, it’s going to be very challenging to feel expressed and aligned and more importantly it’s going to be difficult to move into DESIRE.
Signs the root chakra is in alignment
Here are some signs that your Root Chakra is in alignment:
You have trust in the universe/God(dess).
Your emotional and physical needs are met
You have healthy parental dynamics
Money flows in and out with ease
You have a healthy relationship to food
You feel at home wherever you are
You feel supported
You adapt well to change
You have a strong connection to all that is
Whether that’s a feeling of being connected to source, feeling connected to nature, you have this feeling of connection and like you’re here with a purpose. You have a deep will to live.
When the root chakra is in alignment and the wheel is spinning, no matter what comes
our way, the root chakra is able to move the energy and expel it. We all know that shitty things happen, that there will be ups and downs in life.
But when those events happen when your root chakra is healthy and intact, they won’t throw you off balance.
When we contrast that with a blocked root chakra, these unexpected life events completely rock our world. We’re totally thrown off, and our body isn't able to move that energy as rapidly.
Signs the root chakra is out of alignment
Here are some signs that your Root Chakra is out of alignment:
You have increased levels of anxiety
Feeling threatened and unsafe/insecure
Panic attacks or panic attack symptoms
Negativity towards yourself and others
Loss of confidence
Lack of concentration
An unhealthy relationship with food (i.e. behaviors like binging, starving and purging yourself)
Doubts about things you used to take for granted
Trouble making decisions
Excessive reliance on external feedback
When your root chakra is out of alignment, you have no trust- no trust in yourself, no trust in a higher power, no trust in the process.
It’s like everything is a little wobbly and you could be knocked over at any time.
Imagine a tree. The roots of a tree are what allow it to be steady, to stand tall amongst wind and storms. Without the roots, it would simply blow over.
Your root chakra is the same.
Here are some physical manifestations of root chakra problems:
Back pain
Lethargy
digestive discomfort,
Pain in the legs
Cold hands and feet
Erectile dysfunction in men
Blood and nerve disorders
How does the root chakra come out of alignment?
There are many ways a root chakra can come out of alignment.
One sneaky way is ancestral - this one is tricky because you’re often not consciously aware of where it’s coming from.
The other two ways are during early childhood (major-because we just keep co-creating from there) or when you experience a threat to security as an adult.
Let’s explore those two ways in more detail.👇🏽
Early childhood
Early childhood is what I like to refer to as phase one. Most of people have unprocessed trauma from phase one - whether they’re things we’ve inherited, our souls made contracts or things we were not even co-creators of...they just happened to us.
If we are unable to transmute out of whatever the Phase One issues are, you’ll carry it around like a backpack.
You carry it throughout your day, throughout your life, as it gets heavier and heavier and your shoulders get weaker.
If you haven't transmuted early childhood issues, then your root chakra is certainly going to be out of alignment as an adult.
These are things we have no control over. We were children! But it is still our responsibility to work through them to reset our root chakra and create that sense of security for ourselves.
Early childhood issues can often be the trickiest things to transmute because they require a lot of forgiveness.
Here are some examples of early childhood wounds that could be creating a root chakra alignment issue in adulthood:
Abandonment
Divorce (in many cases)
Food scarcity
Poverty
Moving from place to place
War
Loss of a sibling or parent
Threat to our mental, physical, emotional, sexual and spiritual safety
Many of these situations go back to feeling like you’ve lost control over something, or like there’s been a major intrusion in your life.
I’m willing to bet most of you reading this have probably had at least ONE of these scenarios occur to or around you .
Threat to security
The second way that the root chakra comes out of alignment is by a threat to security as an adult.
If you had an unexpected situation that completely rattled your sense of security, that is 100% affecting your root chakra.
A threat to security could look like:
The loss of a job
The loss of a relationship
The loss of your home
Trouble paying bills
Home intrusion
Sexual/physical assault
The sudden death of a loved one
Poor familial relationships
Most often, one of these things may happen if you have not transmuted whatever happened in your childhood. (Aka cycles)
Or, on the other hand, you could have had a very healthy childhood, with no real big traumas, and then for whatever reason, you suddenly go through a breakup, or lose your job.
Whatever the case, your world is shaken. It may feel like your sense of security has been ripped away from you.
So now, the question becomes, how do we heal?
How to heal your root chakra
The way you heal a root chakra is by creating safety within your temple, no matter what.
When you have unshakable safety, even if external factors occur, you can handle it because you feel rooted and grounded.
You can be going through any kind of experience - whether that’s divorce, losing clients, whatever it is - and actively be creating safety in your body.
It’s not about flipping a switch on or off, it’s about creating a relationship with each chakra. When you can do this, you are free.
Ways to create safety
There are so many ways you can create safety within your body.
Yoga: poses like Warrior Pose, Triangle Pose, and Eagle Pose
Barefoot Earthing: this helps connect you to the earth and feel supported. No matter what you believe about whether or not you’re supported by a higher being, you can ALWAYS find support in the earth. It’s always holding you up.
Playing in nature
Lying in the grass
Hypnosis & Affirmations
All of these practices are things you can incorporate into your everyday life.
When you practice creating that sense of security and safety within yourself, you’ll find true healing.
And once you heal your root chakra, you can move on to aligning all of your other chakras.
The root chakra is the foundation of it all. ✨
See you in the Most Abundant Timeline,
Nathaly
